Scientific or graphing calculator? What do students need to buy
As your kids age the school supply list might be shorter, but it's still not guaranteed to be less expensive.
One item that could trigger sticker shock to parents of middle and high school students is a specialized calculator. Many schools prefer if students are provided with their own personal scientific calculator. In the top math courses, such as Advanced Calculus the use of a graphing calculator may be required.
But, what's the difference? Scientific calculators perform functions in addition, subtraction multiplication and division. The most common scientific calculators have specific buttons for parentheses trigonometric functionsand exponents, the inverses of pi and pi among other things.
A graphing calculator does even more. It'll feature a larger screen, allowing you to input a function and then display a graph of it.
Best Find's Geek Squad agent Derek Meister states that scientific calculatorscan run anywhere from $10 to $60. Graphing calculators are typically more, ranging from $80 and $150.Should the students returning to school buy science or graphing calculators? (KOMO News)
However, Best Buy says you aren't required to buy one , and suggests talking to your school first.
Harmony Weinberg, Edmonds School District's public relations and media supervisor she tells KOMO News each individual school has its own set of rules.
"For higher level classes, like AP Calculus, it is often expected that students have a handheld graphing calculator, such as TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89."
These kinds of calculators are good for AP testing. Weinberg adds that schools have a procedure in place for students to borrow calculators just like they check out textbooks if they don't have or don't want to buy their own.
The Edmonds District School, calculators are treated in a similar way to textbooks in terms of loss or damage, but there is no charge to make use of.
Another option could be in their school-issued laptop. Weinberg says the district of Edmonds "all students have access to scientific and graphing calculators through their district-issued Chromebook." The district is also encouraging teachers to use Desmos online calculators as they can be used in state-wide tests as well.

SEATTLE A family from West Seattle say their young son was told to stay at home after the boy came in contact with someone who had tested positive for COVID-19. It prompted his family members to say that their son was targeted and treated differently by school district officials since the boy was not vaccinated..
The previous week, a 12-year-old student who attends Denny International Middle School was exposed to someone in class who was diagnosed with COVID-19.
Officials at his school told him to stay home for two weeks as they did not believe he was vaccinated.
His family members have recently learned that had he was vaccinated, the seventh grade student wouldn't be compelled to miss class as in the event that he was not showing any symptoms from the virus.
"My kid has no symptoms," stated Jeremy Gollyhorn, the boy's father. "He's totally healthy. Why doesn't he get a negative COVID test and come back to school?"
Gollyhorn claimed that his son is being subject to a different standard that students who've had their shots. And even should he fail a COVID-19 test, the boy will not be allowed back into school until the two-week quarantine time has ended.
However, those close to them who are completely vaccinated and have no symptoms do not need to go through quarantine and may return to classes, although they are advised to be tested every three to five days to ensure.
Gollyhorn stated that it doesn't make sense.
"Vaccinated people can still spread COVID too so what's the difference there?" he said.
A spokesperson said Seattle Public Schools is following the public health guidelines established for the school by the state.
Gollyhorn claimed that the law strips individuals of the freedom to choose. He said his family doesn't believe in vaccines , and incidents like this just make him want to push back.
The day that Seattle Public Schools started the school year on Sept. 1, the district has reported 117 positive COVID-19 cases as well as Denny International Middle School has reported four positive cases during that time.
It's unclear how many staff as well as students have been advised to quarantine because of exposures. However, those absences are considered excused.
